Cholera Outbreak in Sokoto Leaves 25 Killed and 15 Hospitalized
A serious Cholera outbreak in Sokoto has claimed the lives of 25 people in three local government areas
in Sokoto state, out of a total of 1,160 cases that was reported in the state.
The Commissioner of Health for Sokoto state Mr Asabe Balarabe, revealed this to journalists on Monday,
November 18th 2024.
Mrs Asabe Balarabe also went on to say that the state is already treating 15 more outbreak victims from
the Sokoto North, Kware, and Silame local government areas.
According to the commissioner, the 15 active cases we have now were identified by Laboratory testing
based on culture and sensitivity and verified as active instance of the cholera outbreak.
Furthermore the commissioner said that out of the 1,160 people that have been affected by the
outbreak, 25 of the victims have already succumbed to the disease.
The State rescue team are collaborating with the state government to help manage and curtail the spread
of the dreaded disease.
The state Government has in its response to outbreak, directed the immediate purchase and distribution of
drugs free of charge without payment to 18 local government areas to curtail the spread of the disease.
The commissioner also praised the number of women, particularly expectant women, who sick for medical consultations and pregnancy testing at the various health facilities throughout the state.
She said that issues in the health sector, such as crumbling infrastructure and insufficient funding, which have pushed the industry backwards for the previous eight years.
She expressed hope that Governor Ahmad Aliyu, in his benevolence, will see to the revitalization of the state’s health system.
“Patients often face numerous problems in public health institutions, such as, lack of water, and power outages, and lack of adequate Drugs.”
She praised the governor for adding nurses and midwives to meet up with the staffing gap in state public health facilities.
