NYSC Corp Members Can Now be Posted to Private Sector like Banks, Oil and Gas
The Federal Government of Nigeria has removed the ban preventing the posting of the members
of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to public sector, which will allow the corp members to
now be posted and do their primary assignment in the private sector organizations such as Oil and
Gas companies and Banks.
Reporting from a memo issued by the Honorable Minister for Youth and Development, Ayodele Olawande
realized on November 18th, 2024, this new policy directive will take effect with the beginning of 2024
Batch C Orientation camp exercise.
Ayodele Olawande said that the new NYSC policy is part of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s process in combating rising youth unemployment by ensuring that the government agencies work with the vision of his administration.
Adding that directive will firstly take effect in Lagos and Abuja, the previous old NYSC policy which was implemented during the tenure of former of Youth and Sports Development, Bolaji Abdullahi which was aimed at discouraging private companies from making use of cheap labour while promoting public sector capacity building, which restricted corp members to only four sectors of the economy which includes, Agriculture, Health, Education and Infrastructure.
He added that the new NYSC policy will also allow corp members to gain valuable experience in their different chosen field of study, stating that the pervious policy prevented Nigerian Youth from gaining experiences that would have prepared them for the labour market.
The part of the Memo Reads that: “There is an urgent need to review this policy to expand the opportunity and access for corps members to serve in places that are relevant to their areas of study. Without prejudice to the need to constantly review per prevailing realities, I now direct as follows: Lifting of all restrictions on postings.
“Posting of corps members to, as much as practicable, be in line with their course of study. Posting of corps members to select banks and other private sector organizations, including those operating in oil and gas, to commence with Abuja and Lagos.
The directive contained herein will take effect from the date of commencement of the 2024 Batch ‘C Orientation Course and applies in relation to any matter relating to the posting and distribution of corps members to Places of Primary Assignment.
